An 11 Year Old’s Perspective of Global Warming
By Marc Pollard | February 18, 2008
Nonfiction Research Report February 13, 2008 written by an 11 year old:
Until about 150 years ago, the air was clean and pure. That all changed when people started driving cars and building factories. Then some major problems started and that’s when global warming happened.
Scientists have found that gases from cars, factories, and many other things float up into the air and mix with the rain or snow that is in the clouds. When it rains or snows, the gases that are mixed with it begin to fall. This is called acid rain. Acid rain hurts many things on land such as plants, farmers, crops, trees, rivers, lakes, and even oceans. It falls into ponds that might be drinking water for a lot of animals. Since their drinking water isn’t clean, it could hurt them.
There is so much pollution that the gases increase and build up. Up above us is an invisible shield called the ozone layer. It blocks out the sun’s rays just enough, so that we have enough warmth, but so it isn’t too much to hurt nature. Also, if the sun is too strong, it can damage our skin and humans could get sunburned more easily. The gases are very strong and they start to make a hole in the ozone layer. This will hurt farmers, crops, plants, and many other things too.In the arctic, IT’S MELTING!! And the polar bears are dying! Since there is so much pollution, it leaves a hole in the ozone layer like I said before. The sun’s rays are too strong and make it too warm for the polar bears and the cold, arctic environment. Since it is too warm, the arctic starts to melt. That means that the polar bears’ home is vanishing and so is their food. They die of starvation, too much warmth, and no place to live.
There is a type of gas called carbon dioxide which creates a blanket over the earth. The blanket keeps all the heat in. Other types of gases from cars, factories, and other things trap more and more of the sun’s heat. Combined with carbon dioxide, this is too much heat for the earth. If the earth gets just a couple of degrees warmer, it could change the weather in big ways. Places that are always warm could get too hot. Places that are supposed to be cold would get warmer.
Everyday, global warming is a bigger and bigger problem. We can all help out to save the earth in very simple ways like recycling and carpooling. We can all make a difference and it is time to start!

Advantive Launches SharePoint Portal Server 2007 for Tribal IT Firm
By Marc Pollard | September 10, 2007
Advantive developed an online collaboration tool for a leading Tribal IT firm POWTEC. POWTEC’s goal was to boost employee productivity by simplifying everyday business activities online.
Advantive has been working with SharePoint and Oracle Portal for the past five years. We and our clients have found immediate benefits in initiating, tracking, and reporting common business activities such as document review and approval, issue tracking, and signature collection. POWTEC’s IT infrastructure called for SharePoint Portal Server 2007 based on their business requirements, licensing structure and the fact they are using Active Directory for single sign-on. Now their entire organization can collaborate on business development activities, tasks, projects, human resources, finance, operations, etc by accessing a secure online website anytime anywhere. Tight integration with familiar client applications, e-mail, and Web browsers provides you with a simple, consistent experience. Advantive would be happy to demonstrate the collaboration tools we have produced and learn together how these solutions would help your organization become more productive. Average costs range from $5,000 to $15,000 for development, depending on size of organization and current licensing relationships. We can do this in-person or online. To schedule a demo, please contact Marc Pollard at 206.595.0202.

Tech companies wake up to traffic nightmare
By Stanley Florek | September 5, 2007
Traffic across Lake Washington is a daily nightmare. This is why Advantive embraces alternative commute strategies like public transport, carpooling, and telecommuting. IT workers do work with their minds, and the capital they use in the form of servers, networks, and software, is portable to anywhere in the world. I have been saying for years, if Microsoft has the capability to outsource work to India, it can figure out how to support its workers in Ballard. It looks that mindset it finally reaching some in Redmond… -SF
How many people have companies like Microsoft lost over the years because of the commuting nightmare between Seattle and the Eastside? Maybe none, maybe only a few. Considering the worsening traffic situation for people who need to work on one side of the lake every day, but want to dwell on the other, life is definitely not easy.
Now it sounds like some tech companies are finally getting wiser because our local transportation officials are not.
